Leica kuvaaja Arto Wiikari avusti minua pompottamalla palloa. Katukuvauksen kursseilleni laukaisuviiveen oivaltamista helpottamaan keksimäni pallon pompotustehtävä oli käytössä myös M9:n kanssa.  Arto pomputteli superpalloa lattialla ja yritin saada kuvaani juuri sen hetken, kun pallo koski hänen käteensä.  Kameran miettimisen aiheuttaman pienen viiveen vuoksi nappia on painettava hieman ennen kuin pallo osuu käteen.  Kuvassa näkyy se ylösnousevan pallon sijainti, jossa painalluksen on tapahduttava, että kosketuksen hetki pysähtyy kuvaan.  Pallolta kuluu jäljellä olevaan matkaan sama silmänräpäyksen aika, jonka kamera tarvitsee valmisteleviin toimenpiteisiin ennenkuin varsinainen valotus eli salaman välähdys tapahtuu.  Luonnollisesti pompottajan lyönnin nopeus vaikuttaa matkaan.  Leica M9:n vaatima ennakko on pitkähkö.

Leica professional Arto Wiikari was my assistant as ball player when I shot with M9. At my street photography workshops I use this playful trick in order to get students understand the meaning of shutter lag.  Arto hit superball to floor by hand, and I tried to get in photo that short moment when he touched the ball.

Every camera has a lag between the time of pressing button and the time of actual exposure.   Every camera user should be aware how long a lag hers/his camera has, how long time it is thinking before working.  This test gives a simple way to see how the button must be pushed in advance to get the picture of hitting.

For simplicity reasons I show only the spot of triggering.  Button must be pushed when ball is going upwards.  Ball takes the same time in milliseconds to reach hand than camera needs time in milliseconds to proceed all necessary actions before it is ready to open the shutter, set fire to flash and get the exposure.  You must pay attention to how hard player hits the ball.   These measures change by person and by camera.  In any case the shutter lag of Leica M9 is not one of the shortests.
