Leica M9:n laukaisijassa on valikosta kytkettävä hipaisulaukaisu-asetus. The shutter trigger of Leica M9 has soft release mode to be selected in menu.

Leica M9:n esite vuosi julkisuuteen etukäteen. Olen suurella mielenkiinnolla lueskellut netistä lataamani esitetiedoston, erityisesti laukaisua käsittelevistä kohdista. En löytänyt mitään mainintaa siitä, että M8:n pitkähkö laukaisuviive – 80 millisekuntia – olisi koko filmiruudun kennolla varustetussa M9:ssä saatu lyhentymään. Sen sijaan laukaisijassa kerrotaan olevan erikseen asetettava, normaalilaukaisua kevyempi hipaisulaukaisu, jota käytetään estämään kameran heilahdusta pitkillä valotusajoilla. Laukaisunapin yhteydessä ei näy mitään säädintä tätä varten, joten asetus on tehtävä valikoista.

Leica M9 on mitoiltaaan täsmälleen M8:n kokoinen, joten voisi kuvitella, että laukaisimen rakenne on säilynyt muuttumattomana. Kamera-lehteen kirjoittamassani M8:n testissä käy ilmi, kuinka sen laukaisin on rakennettu. Näkyvällä napilla, jota sormi painaa, on vasteenaan metalliset kierrejouset. Napin alla on kullattu nappi ja sillä kullatut kierrejouset, joissa sähkövirta kulkee. Tämä kytkin vapauttaa sulkimen liikkeeseen valotustapahtumaa varten.

Umpimähkäinen arvioni on, että M9:n hipaisuasetuksella laukaisu tapahtuu etuvedon pykälässä, joka on vasteeltaan pienempi kuin varsinaisen laukaisun pykälä M8:n laukaisijassa. Toinen vaihtoehto on, että laukaisin on rakennettu kokonaan uudelleen. Kun toimiva Leica M9 tulee Suomen ensiesittelyyn tämän viikon torstaina 10.9.-09, saamme omin sormin kokea hipaisulaukaisun herkkyyden – ja mahdollisen lisäviiveen.

The brochure of Leica M9 was leaked beforehand. I read it with great interest, especially text sections about the shutter. I did not notice mentioning that the lengthy shutter lag of M8, 80 milliseconds, is any shorter in Full Frame M9. On the contary, shutter release button has new feature in M9; you can select soft release mode in the menu. Soft release is said to prevent camera movement when long exposure times are used.

Leica M9 has same overall dimensions than M8, so it is obvious that the structure of shutter release button and its working mechanism has not been changed in M9. Brochure says, that on `soft mode´ only slight pressure on the button is enough to trigger the camera. My `blind´estimation is that the new soft release mode uses the half way stop of button to release shutter curtain on its way to make the exposure. Standard mode uses the end stop for exposure, as usual. Only real world triggering will tell if there is new mechanism in M9, and if it is faster than M8´s mech.

Why this is important? Leica M film camera has shorter shutter lag – about 10 to 20 milliseconds – than any other system camera has. This “prime time tool” ability was lost in digital M8. `Professional´ Leica M8 has the same shutter lag time as `amateur´ Nikon D80 does. When you try to catch the desicive moment you must to push the button in advance to compensate the lag of M8. In Finland Leica M9 is going to be revealed to press one day later than in the rest of the world, date here is September 10th and time 9.00 AM. So, then I can trigger the button of M9 and tell if it is any better than the button of M8.
