Walfred Moisio: New York 1935-1963 / Unseen pioneer of street photography

WALFRED MOISIO TULI KUVISTAAN TUNNETUKSI vasta kuolemansa jälkeen. Suomalaisten siirtolaisten jälkeläinen Walfred syntyi USA:ssa vuonna 1910 ja kasvoi vanhempiensa omenatarhalla Ashby´ssa, Massachusetts´issa. Moisio opiskeli Colombian yliopistossa 1928-1933 ja samalla itsenäisesti opetteli valokuvaamaan. Walfred muutti New Yorkiin 1933, jossa hän toimi freelancer valokuvaajana ja valokuvauksen opettajana. Vuonna 1963 Walfred Moisio muutti takaisin Ashby´n seudulle, jossa hän eli 92 vuotiaaksi.
Vasta vuonna 2000, pari vuotta ennen kuolemaansa Walfred Moisio esitteli New Yorkissa vuosien 1935-1963 aikana kadulla kuvaamansa aineiston Michelle Berube´lle, joka myöhemmin peri työkseen studiokuvaajana toimineen Walfredin valokuva-arkiston kokonaisuudessaan.
Michelle Beruben ymmärrettyä Walfred Moision työn arvon kuva-arkistosta valikoitiin yhteistyössä kuraattorien kanssa alkuperäisten vintage-vedosten kokoelmat, ne ovat esillä gallerioissa: yksi, kaksi ja kolme. Zoozoom Magazine esitelee Walfred Moision työtä: Out of the Shadows.
Walfred Moision valokuvat ovat mielenkiintoinen yhdistelmä äärimmäisiä kuvakulmia, valo-varjo tunnelmia ja julkisen elämän tarkkailua. Galleristi kiteyttää: Moisio yhdisti aikaisen Neuvostoliittolaisen konstruktivismin tyylin ja New York Photo League -nimellä tunnetun suoran sosiaalisen dokumentaarisen valokuvauksen piirteet omaan työhönsä.
Voimme vain arvailla, miksi hän ei työskennellyt oman tuotantonsa esilletuomiseksi elinaikanaan.
WALFRED MOISIO BECAME KNOWN BY HIS PHOTOGRAPHY only after his death. Walfred was born to Finnish immigrants in the USA in 1910, he grew in his family´s apple farm in Ashby, MA. Moisio studied at Columbia University 1928-1933 and self-taught himself photography at the same time. Walfred moved to New York in 1933, where he worked as freelancer photographer and photography teacher. Walfred Moisio retuned to his childhoods home in Ashby in 1963, where he lived and worked until passed away at the age of 92.
In the year 2000, only two years before his death, Walfred Moisio introduced to Michelle Berube the photographic work he had done on streets of New York in 1935-1963. Berube later inherited the complete photographic archive of Moisio.
Michelle Berube understood the value of Moisio´work. From his archive curators selected large collection of vintage prints, which are presented in galleries one, two and three. Zoozoom magazine features Walfred Moisio´s work: Out of the Shadows.
Walfred Moisio´s street photography is interesting combination of creating extreme angles, athmospheric light-shadow compositions and observation of public life. A gallerist pinpoints: Moisio combined high vantage points and extreme angles of early Soviet constructivism together with straight social documentary of New York League -group, and melted these to his own work.
We can only guess why he was not industrious to get his own work seen during his lifetime.
